Mortal Kombat 1 Reigns as Top-Selling Fighting Game of the Current Generation
2025-08-11 23:17:13NetherRealm Studios creative director Ed Boon recently shared official sales figures for Mortal Kombat 1, confirming its position as the highest-selling fighting game of the current console generation. While the Mortal Kombat 1 reboot faced some criticism from fans and has concluded its DLC support, its commercial success remains undeniable.
Released in 2023 as a fresh start for the legendary franchise, Mortal Kombat 1 earned an 84 average score on OpenCritic. While critics praised its refined combat system and stunning visuals, some players expressed disappointment with the game's content volume and online functionality compared to previous entries.
As reported by PC Gamer, Mortal Kombat 1 has sold an impressive 6.2 million copies. This achievement places it ahead of major competitors like Street Fighter 6 (5 million) and Tekken 8 (3 million). The only potential challenger is Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, which moved 5 million units in its first three months but hasn't reported updated figures since.
The sales announcement comes shortly after NetherRealm's May 2024 confirmation that no further DLC content would be developed for MK1. The studio continues to support the game with balance updates while shifting focus to their next project.
Fans anticipated the end of new content following the surprise release of Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition earlier this year. During its active support period, MK1 received two character packs and the Khaos Reigns story expansion.
