The popular augmented reality game Pokemon GO is set to undergo one of its most substantial updates yet, with the level ceiling being elevated from 50 to 80. Originally launching in 2016 with a maximum level of 40, the game previously expanded its limits in 2020 through the Go Beyond update, which introduced level-specific challenges alongside experience point requirements.

The previous level expansion to 50 introduced specialized research tasks that created a more demanding progression path beyond level 40. This design required dedicated effort from players, making the achievement of level 50 a notable accomplishment within the community. Now, after five years at the level 50 cap, trainers worldwide are preparing for another significant elevation of the game's progression system.

Scheduled for October 15, the update will not only raise the maximum level but also completely rebalance the leveling curve throughout the entire progression system. This recalibration means players will advance through levels more quickly on their journey to the new cap. The existing Level-Up Research tasks for levels 41-50 will be retired, replaced by new challenges designed for levels 71-80.

Niantic has confirmed that no players will experience level reduction due to these changes. Instead, the most active trainers will automatically advance to appropriate levels based on their accumulated experience points. The update also brings new progression rewards, including expanded Pokemon storage capacity, addressing a long-standing request from the player community.

Recognizing the dedication of players who reached level 50 under the previous system, the developers will award special commemorative items. Before the update goes live at 11:59 PM local time on October 14, all players will receive a medal reflecting their highest achieved level between 1 and 50. Those who attained level 50 will additionally obtain an exclusive Level 50 Jacket and a unique avatar pose, preserving their accomplishment status within the game.
