Splinter Cell Remake Faces Another Leadership Vacancy as Game Director Position Remains Unfilled

A recently removed job posting from Ubisoft indicates that the upcoming Splinter Cell remake may be operating without a game director at present. The much-awaited revival of the stealth franchise was officially announced by Ubisoft in 2021, yet the development journey appears to be encountering multiple obstacles, with another key leadership position seemingly becoming vacant.

If the employment listing proves accurate, this wouldn't mark the first instance of the project experiencing leadership turnover. In 2022, less than a year following the game's announcement, the Splinter Cell remake lost its original game director. David Grivel, who initially led the project at Ubisoft, had dedicated over ten years to the studio. Throughout his tenure, Grivel contributed to several of Ubisoft's most recognizable franchises, including Splinter Cell Blacklist, multiple Far Cry installments, and Assassin's Creed Unity. The experienced developer subsequently transitioned to Electronic Arts, where he served as senior design director for the successful first-person shooter Battlefield 6.

Following Grivel's exit, Andy Schmoll, previously a systems designer for Far Cry 6, assumed the role of game director for the Splinter Cell remake. According to Schmoll's professional profile on LinkedIn, she appears to have departed from the studio in September 2025. Gaming publication Tech4Gamers subsequently discovered that Ubisoft was actively recruiting a new director to assume control of the project. Although the job advertisement has since been removed, a screenshot preserved by Tech4Gamers explicitly references the position being for Splinter Cell, with responsibilities encompassing the "moment-to-moment gameplay" direction.

The specific circumstances at Ubisoft Toronto that have prompted two game directors to depart within a three-year timeframe remain unclear, but it's evident that the Splinter Cell remake is confronting development challenges. Reports suggest Ubisoft Toronto is revising the narrative to appeal to contemporary audiences, potentially explaining the scarcity of updates since the project's initial unveiling four years ago. The studio's limited communication has generated concern among the fan community, with some speculating whether the remake might have been discreetly canceled.

Despite Ubisoft's official silence regarding the project's status, the recent employment listing implies development continues. Contrary to speculation that the project had been terminated, industry sources provided development updates last year, confirming the remake remained in active production. Sources indicated the title operates under the codename "North" and utilizes the Snowdrop engine for development.

Ubisoft's announcement earlier this year regarding delays for some of its major productions may have significantly impacted the Splinter Cell remake's timeline. While the publisher didn't specify which titles would experience postponements, one can reasonably assume that as one of the studio's most celebrated franchises alongside Assassin's Creed and Far Cry, Splinter Cell's unannounced release schedule has likely undergone internal adjustments.
