The original Hogwarts Legacy, released in February 2023, became the best-selling game of the year, surpassing even Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Its success has already secured a sequel, but recent job postings suggest a potential shift toward multiplayer and live service features.

WB Games has had a mixed track record with live service and multiplayer titles. Gotham Knights (2022) failed to make a significant impact, and MultiVersus, despite a relaunch, is set to shut down soon. The biggest disappointment, however, was Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Rocksteady's ambitious live service game, which was discontinued less than a year after its 2024 launch.

Despite these setbacks, WB Games appears undeterred. A recent Avalanche Software job listing for the Hogwarts Legacy sequel mentions "Story Integration in Multiplayer Systems," explicitly citing PvP, PvE, matchmaking, and live service. This suggests that parts of the sequel's narrative could unfold through online multiplayer components.

It remains unclear whether the entire game will adopt a live service model or if multiplayer will be a side feature alongside a traditional single-player campaign. Given the backlash against Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, it’s surprising that WB Games would consider another live service venture—especially for a franchise built on single-player immersion. However, the original game’s combat system was well-received, and a multiplayer mode could offer fresh gameplay dynamics.

Fans are divided. While some are excited about the prospect of dueling friends in the Wizarding World, others fear the sequel might abandon the solo adventure that made Hogwarts Legacy so beloved. With the game still in early development, these plans could evolve. Only time will tell how the sequel balances single-player and multiplayer elements.
