Destiny 2's The Edge of Fate Expansion Introduces Major Combat Overhauls

Bungie has announced groundbreaking modifications to Destiny 2's combat system as part of The Edge of Fate expansion, marking one of the most substantial gameplay evolutions in recent years. These changes promise to redefine player engagement with melee mechanics and weapon balancing.

Originally teased under the Codename Frontiers project, these systemic overhauls have gradually come into focus through Bungie's recent communications. The developer has shared an ambitious full-year roadmap for Destiny 2, outlining two compact expansions, reward systems, and major updates that will reshape the gaming experience.

In their latest developer blog post, Bungie's Sandbox Team detailed the revolutionary shift in melee damage calculation. Beginning July 15, damage modifiers will operate additively rather than multiplicatively, creating a more balanced but potentially higher floor for melee abilities. This adjustment particularly benefits status effects that enhance damage output.

The expansion introduces the Armor 3.0 system, featuring a new Melee stat that directly influences combat effectiveness. Investing in this stat (up to 200 points) can yield up to 30% damage enhancement, with this bonus functioning multiplicatively with other damage boosts. However, the update removes melee scaling with Scorch and Ignition effects, aligning them with Jolt mechanics.

Glaives undergo significant transformation in The Edge of Fate, now classified as unpowered melee weapons. This change allows them to benefit from all melee damage enhancements, including the new armor stat. While their base damage against PvE enemies has been reduced, their damage-per-second potential has increased substantially.
