Don't Nod Faces Another Round of Layoffs Amid Industry Challenges
2025-06-26 21:19:48French game studio Don't Nod, acclaimed for its work on the Life is Strange franchise, has reportedly experienced another round of layoffs. The news was confirmed by Mary Pouliot, Principal Cinematic Artist at Don’t Nod Montreal, who shared the unfortunate update on LinkedIn. Despite anticipating the move due to widespread industry cutbacks, Pouliot described the layoffs as a "real shock."
Founded in 2008, Don't Nod rose to prominence with the release of the first Life is Strange game in 2015. The studio has since developed several notable titles, including Vampyr, Jusant, and Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden. However, recent financial struggles have led to multiple rounds of layoffs, with the first significant cut occurring in October 2024, affecting 21% of the studio's workforce.
The gaming industry has faced turbulent times, with numerous studios downsizing in recent years. Deck Nine, the developer behind Life is Strange: Double Exposure, also announced layoffs in late 2024. Square Enix, the publisher of Double Exposure, reported "large losses" following the game's mixed reception.
Despite these setbacks, Don't Nod continues to push forward with upcoming projects, including the cinematic action-adventure Aphelion, slated for release in 2026. The studio's latest title, Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, has received positive reviews for its engaging narrative, nostalgic atmosphere, and memorable soundtrack.
