Rumored Banjo-Kazooie Revival Potentially Scrapped Amid Microsoft Restructuring
2025-07-04 03:34:57Recent rumors surrounding a potential new installment in the beloved Banjo-Kazooie series have taken a disappointing turn, as insider reports suggest the project may have been canceled due to Microsoft's ongoing corporate restructuring. While never officially confirmed, whispers of a revival for the iconic bear-and-bird duo have circulated for years, only to potentially meet the same fate as other recently axed Microsoft titles.
The original Banjo-Kazooie debuted on Nintendo 64 in 1998, quickly establishing itself as a standout 3D platformer. Developed by Rare, the game followed the adventures of Banjo the bear and his feathered companion Kazooie as they battled the witch Gruntilda to rescue Banjo's sister Tooty. The franchise saw several sequels and spin-offs, but has remained dormant since 2008's Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts for Xbox 360.
Hope for a series revival emerged in late 2023 when industry insider NateDrake hinted at an active Banjo-Kazooie project in development. However, recent statements from the same source suggest the project may have been shelved, with no updates received in over two years. This speculation coincides with Microsoft's announcement of significant workforce reductions affecting about 9,000 employees, alongside cancellations of other anticipated titles like Everwild and the Perfect Dark reboot.
The potential cancellation hits particularly hard for fans following reports that Gregg Mayles, the original Banjo-Kazooie director and Rare veteran of 35 years, may be departing the studio. Mayles, who joined Rare in 1989, played pivotal roles in nearly 30 of the developer's titles, including both mainline Banjo-Kazooie games. While unconfirmed officially, multiple sources within Rare have indicated his impending departure.
