Cyberpunk 2077 Sees Player Resurgence Amid Edgerunners Season 2 Announcement

The dystopian RPG Cyberpunk 2077 is witnessing a significant player resurgence on Steam, with concurrent numbers reaching impressive heights not seen since earlier this year. This renewed interest coincides with Netflix and CD Projekt Red's confirmation that a second season of the acclaimed Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime is in development.

Originally launched in September 2022, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners served as a prequel narrative to CD Projekt Red's futuristic open-world game Cyberpunk 2077. The anime's critical success helped rehabilitate the game's reputation following its troubled initial release.

Despite CD Projekt Red's previous statements about concluding major updates for Cyberpunk 2077, the studio continues to support the game with substantial patches. While update 2.2 was expected to be the final major release, the developer recently announced that patch 2.3 is forthcoming for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms. However, this update has experienced a slight delay from its originally planned June 26 release date as the team seeks additional polish time. A revised launch window remains unconfirmed.

Amid Edgerunners Season 2

The update delay hasn't dampened player enthusiasm, as SteamDB data reveals Cyberpunk 2077 achieved a peak of over 66,000 concurrent players on July 6 - its highest since February. For context, the game has typically maintained 30,000-40,000 simultaneous players over the past six months. While still below its launch peak of over one million players, these numbers represent remarkable longevity for a nearly five-year-old single-player title.

Industry analysts attribute this player surge to multiple factors, most notably the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 announcement during Anime Expo 2025. CD Projekt Red confirmed their continued collaboration with Studio TRIGGER for this new chapter, described as "a raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge" set in Night City. While console player data remains undisclosed, the Steam metrics clearly demonstrate the anime's impact on game engagement.

When update 2.3 eventually releases, another player count spike is anticipated. Though specific patch contents remain undisclosed, CD Projekt Red indicates it will mirror the scale of update 2.2, which introduced significant features including expanded vehicle customization, new purchasable vehicles, photo mode enhancements, and numerous quality-of-life improvements.
