The gaming community experienced a notable surprise during Gamescom Opening Night Live when instead of the anticipated Black Myth: Wukong expansion reveal, attendees were treated to the inaugural glimpse of Black Myth: Zhong Kui. While specific details about this new installment remain limited, confirmation has been provided that it will maintain the single-player action RPG format and eventually launch on PC and contemporary console platforms. Similar to Sun Wukong, Zhong Kui originates from Chinese mythological traditions, described by Gamescom host Geoff Keighley as a "deity who captures spirits while traversing the realms between the underworld and the mortal world."

According to reports from MP1st, CEO Feng Ji elaborated on the development shift through a Weibo post, explaining that while post-launch DLC for Black Myth: Wukong was initially planned, creative discussions with co-founder Yang Qui prompted a reconsideration of direction. This philosophical exchange ultimately inspired the team to pursue completely new creative territory with Black Myth: Zhong Kui. Feng Ji emphasized their development philosophy, stating: "We aim to liberate our creative capabilities, engage in bold experimentation, move beyond established patterns, and build something entirely new from the ground up."

Despite this directional shift, Feng Ji provided reassurance to fans that the studio remains deeply connected to "Journey to the West," the classical literary work that inspired Black Myth: Wukong. Given the game's extraordinary success across both PS5 and PC platforms, the CEO expressed shared enthusiasm for the mythological universe, noting: "Similar to our dedicated community, I maintain profound affection for the world of Journey to the West—a realm populated by demons, mythical creatures, deities, and enlightened beings.
