Soulja Boy Faces New Allegations of Rebranding Retroid Handheld Consoles
2025-11-04 04:09:02Retroid has officially responded to allegations that American rapper Soulja Boy is marketing handheld gaming devices that appear to be repackaged versions of their original products.
Soulja Boy's history with gaming consoles has been consistently problematic. Back in 2018, he was forced to withdraw his gaming systems following legal threats from Nintendo, as some of his products allegedly contained unauthorized Nintendo emulators running classic titles without permission. His 2021 attempt to reenter the market involved similar tactics, with accusations that he was simply rebranding the original Retroid Pocket and selling it under his own branding. Now, in 2025, the pattern continues with his latest handheld console showing remarkable similarities to current Retroid offerings.
In an interview with Retro Dodo's Brandon Saltalamacchia, a representative from Retroid confirmed that Soulja Boy lacks legal authorization to rebrand and resell their products. "He does not have permission to rebrand our products and sell them as his own," stated the retro handheld console manufacturer. The company further emphasized that the Pocket Flip 2 holds US patent protection under Retroid's name.
The allegedly cloned device, rebranded as the SouljaGame Flip, currently appears on the rapper's official website priced at approximately $200 USD, though initial reports suggested the original asking price exceeded $400. A detailed comparison between the SouljaGame Flip and Retroid's Pocket Flip 2 reveals nearly identical specifications and design elements, raising significant questions about the product's originality.
According to industry reports from Retro Dodo, the American rapper appears to have replicated another of Retroid's popular handheld consoles, the Retroid Pocket 4. While this particular product seems to have been removed from Soulja Boy's official website, available images of the alleged clone demonstrate such close resemblance to the original that distinguishing between the two devices becomes challenging for consumers.
Despite the ongoing controversies, Soulja Boy has previously claimed substantial financial success with his gaming console ventures. In 2018, he asserted that his SouljaGame consoles achieved sales exceeding five million units, despite their premium pricing. The gaming community now watches with interest to see whether his latest offering, the SouljaGame Flip, will replicate this claimed success, and how Retroid will address what appears to be another instance of product rebranding without authorization.
