Mario Kart World: The Near Exclusion of Classic Items and New Features
2025-06-06 01:43:19Mario Kart World almost made history by omitting two of its most iconic items for the first time since the original game. The Nintendo Switch 2 has launched, bringing with it the latest installment in the Mario Kart series. As one of the first exclusives for the Switch 2, Mario Kart World was even featured in a special console bundle released on June 5. Breaking from tradition, the game connects all its tracks in an expansive overworld, allowing players to freely explore in the new Free Roam mode.
The core objective of Mario Kart World remains unchanged: cross the finish line first. Players can utilize a variety of quirky power-ups to gain an edge or hinder opponents, including new items like the Coin Shell (which grants coins), the freezing Ice Flower, and even Kamek, the Magikoopa wizard who can transform rival racers.
Many classic Mario Kart items, such as the Spiny Shell and Bob-Omb, are present in Mario Kart World. However, two fan-favorite power-ups—the Banana and Green Shell—were almost cut for the first time in the series. Producer Kosuke Yabuki revealed in an interview with GamesRadar that the team reviewed all classic elements to determine their relevance in the new game. Initially, the Banana and Green Shell didn’t seem to fit with Mario Kart World's advanced mechanics, like wall-riding and rail-grinding.
Ultimately, the Banana and Green Shell were included in Mario Kart World, preserving their legacy since the original Super Mario Kart on the SNES. The Banana peel, when dropped, causes racers to spin out, while the Green Shell travels straight, knocking over anyone in its path—unlike the homing Red Shell or the first-place-targeting Spiny Shell.
While these items may be trickier to use effectively in Mario Kart World's open-track design, fans will undoubtedly appreciate their return. The game is now available for those who secured a Nintendo Switch 2 at launch, with an update patch released just before its debut.
