In mid-August 2025, Louisiana state authorities filed a lawsuit against Roblox, claiming the platform inadequately protected its substantial underage user base from predatory behavior and explicit content. Roblox Corporation refuted these allegations as "inaccurate," pointing to their rigorous content moderation systems and ongoing innovations in child protection measures. The company emphasized that 36% of their user population consists of children under 13 years old.

The platform has unveiled two major policy adjustments addressing recent child safety concerns. The more immediate change affects content labeled with the "Restricted" maturity rating, which will no longer appear in search results or recommendations for users under 18 effective August 29. Company representatives described this measure as a straightforward approach to reducing younger audiences' exposure to potentially inappropriate material.

Looking forward, Roblox plans to completely prevent underage users from accessing Restricted-rated experiences by increasing the minimum age requirement from 17 to 18. Although the precise implementation date remains unspecified, the company has committed to enacting this change before the conclusion of 2025.

The updated age restrictions include one notable exception for minor users. Seventeen-year-old Roblox creators who have previously published Restricted-rated content will maintain access to their own creations. These developers may continue distributing games with adult-oriented labels temporarily, but upon policy implementation, they will be prohibited from releasing additional Restricted experiences until reaching 18 years of age. Age verification occurs through the Account Info section in Settings and necessitates government-issued identification.

These policy revisions follow closely after Roblox's announcement regarding the discontinuation of all unrated game experiences starting September 30. This initiative seeks to ensure greater certainty that younger users exclusively encounter age-appropriate content on the popular platform. While some community members have expressed support for the new measures, others have raised concerns about the age verification process, particularly questioning the necessity of providing government identification for accounts that have existed for over 15 years, which inherently indicates the users are no longer minors.
